In a recent article in Cosmetic Surgery Times, a study presented the theory that sleeping causes “facial distortion” and can result in wrinkles that are not correctable using Botox or other fillers. Many lines or wrinkles are formed by the muscles distorting the face while frowning, smiling etc. This condition is well treated using Botox and/or Juvederm or Voluma. However, the distortion caused by sleeping is a different process. Pressed against a pillow or bed causes pressure against the face, forming lines or folds which are considered “mechanical stress” and create lines which are perpendicular to the normal facial folds.
Indeed, Dr David Dellinger, founder of Elysian Plastic Surgery notes “We have noticed over the last several years that both wrinkles and facial atrophy seem to occur more commonly on the side the patient typically sleeps. Flattening of the cheek and jowl area is much more common on the side the patient normally reports sleeping. Also, we have noticed more vertical line lines on the chest and decolletage area, which is more common in side sleepers.”
So, the solution is easy – sleep on your back. Not so easy for many people as back sleeping is difficult for many and on average, during sleep people change positions up to 27 times per night, however that number drops with age, so you are more likely to be in the same position longer.
Is there any solution? There are specialty pillows, including JuveRest, that claim to minimize distortion of the face while sleeping, although there is no long term data on the use of these pillows. Addtionally, treatments that help to improve the collagen matrix include MicroPen, radiofrequency and ultrasound waves. BBL Photofacial also helps to restore collagen in the face and chest areas.
