Breast reductions can greatly improve quality of life. However, you might be concerned about whether or not one is compatible with your future plans. Yes, less back, shoulder and neck pain would be wonderful, but what if you want to breastfeed your future children?
The Key Facts about Breast Reduction and Breast Feeding
Breast reduction doesn’t guarantee you won’t be able to breastfeed in the future, but it might have a negative impact.
So, what are potential side effects of breast reduction surgery that can impact breastfeeding?
- Nipple Sensitivity: The way the nerves respond after surgery varies. You can end up with the same level of sensitivity, less or even more. If more, you might find that breastfeeding is simply too uncomfortable for you. If less, you may find it difficult to trigger letdown.
- Reduced Milk Production: If the milk ducts are impacted, you may produce less milk than you would have otherwise. Some women even find they cannot produce any milk after a reduction.
- Where the Incisions Are Placed: Incisions under the fold of the breast and in the armpit have less impact on milk production and letdown than those around the areola.
- If You Need Nipple Repositioning: Sometimes, enough tissue is removed that the nipples must be moved for a natural look. If this happens, you are more likely to have problems breastfeeding.
